How to install Weglot Translate for BigCommerce?

There are 5 main steps to install Weglot Translate for BigCommerce:

Step 1: Get Weglot Translate from BigCommerce App Marketplace

Go to this link which leads you to the Weglot Translate app on BigCommerce App Marketplace.

Then click on “Get this app”.

Step 2: Choose to log in or sign up to your BigCommerce account

You will have to choose to log in or sign up to a BigCommerce account.

If you already have your BigCommerce account set up, then click on Log in.

If you are new to BigCommerce, then click on Sign up to set up your brand new BigCommerce account. This is rather easy to sign up, since you just need to follow instructions given on the screen by BigCommerce.

Step 3: Click Install

Here you simply click on Install to start the Weglot Translate installation.

Step 4: Click Confirm

Weglot Translate will ask for your permission to access your BigCommerce store. Therefore, to install the app, you need to click Confirm. By clicking Confirm, you have agreed to allow Weglot Translate to view basic store configuration settings and your basic information such as name and email, but not your password.

Step 5: Integrate Weglot in two different ways

After finishing step 4, you have installed the app Weglot Translate. But in order to work with the app, you need to integrate it.

There are two different ways that you can integrate Weglot Translate:

  • Javascript integration: This method is quick and simple. Simply copy and paste a snippet of Javascript code into the proper location on your BigCommerce store. This way only takes you 5 minutes to install and requires no prior coding experience.

  • Subdomains integration: It’s ideal for SEO since it lets you build separate subdomains for each of your target languages. Subdomains will be given to your translated pages. Installing this takes approximately 15 minutes and requires adding entries to your DNS records.

And now let’s go through each method in detail!

Method 1. Javascript integration

Step 1: Create a Weglot account

This is where you’ll find all of your translations and where you’ll be able to manage them. Simply sign up for a Weglot account here .

Step 2: Choose integration

After you authenticate your email, you will be sent to the Weglot setup page. Scroll down to the section “Other potential integrations” and then select “Use Javascript integration”.

Step 3: Choose languages

Choose your website’s original language (the language in which it was created) and the languages you wish to translate into.

In my example, my website is in English, and I’ve chosen to translate it into French. Click the “Next” button.

Step 4: Copy the code

The code snippet you need to copy will be shown on the screen after that.

Step 5: Paste the code

Go to Storefront > Script Manager in your BigCommerce admin and click “Create Script.”

Fill in the name and description as desired. And then fill in the blanks:

  • “Location on Page” : Head
  • “Select pages where script will be added” : All pages
  • “Script type” : Script
  • Script Content : Here, you paste the code from your Weglot account.

Then, click “Save”. step 5

It’s finished. Now browse your website and reload it; the language button will appear in the bottom right corner.

Change the language on your website, and you should see the automatic translations!

Step 7: (Optional) Edit your translations

All of your translations can be found in your Weglot account under “Translations.” You can make changes to all of your translations there.

Method 2. Subdomains integration

It’s worth noting that, in order to use this integration, you must already have your own domain name. Do not select this integration if you have not yet purchased your domain. You will, in fact, need to enter the DNS records area of your domain name in order to establish subdomains.

If you have your own domain already, please proceed with the below steps:

Step 1: Create a Weglot account

This is where you will get the translations and where you will manage them. Simply up for a Weglot account here .

You’ll be sent to Weglot’s setup page after validating your email. Enter the address of your website here (You must enter your own domain name, like mywebsite.com)

Then, choose your website’s original language (the language in which it was created) and the languages you wish to convert it into.

In my example, my website is in English, and I’ve chosen to translate it into French. After that, click the “Next” button.

Step 3: Enter your DNS records

Enter the DNS records that are shown to you in your DNS Record Zone. It might be anywhere, depending on where you acquired the domain.

  • If you purchased the domain through BigCommerce, follow these simple steps: Server Settings > Email & DNS Records (you’ll find it here.)
  • If you purchased your domain from a third-party supplier such as GoDaddy, 1&1, Gandhi, etc.: It’s obviously in this external provider account in this case.
Step 4: Validate DNS

After you’ve entered the DNS, click “Check DNS,” and it should turn green after a few minutes. If it doesn’t, it means that you haven’t properly entered the DNS records.

Only click “Next” when all DNS is green.

Step 5: Copy/ paste the Javascript snippet

It may take a few minutes for your subdomains to be created. Next, the Javascript library needs to be installed. Copy the Javascript code from the screen:

Go to Storefront > Script Manager in your BigCommerce admin and click “Create Script.”

Fill in the name and description as you want. And then fill in the blanks:

  • “Location on Page” : Head
  • “Select pages where script will be added” : All pages
  • “Script type” : Script
  • Script Content : Here, you paste the code from your Weglot account

AFter that, click “Save”.

It’s completed. Now, go to your website and reload the page; the language button will appear in the bottom right corner.

You can try changing the language, and you should see automatic translations on your website!

Step 7: (Optional) Edit your translations

You will find all your translations in your Weglot account, under “Translations”.

There, you can modify all your translations.
