Before uploading your media, ensure it meets Shopify’s requirements for optimal performance:
- Image Size: Keep image files under 20MB for faster loading times. A resolution of 2048 x 2048 pixels works well for product images.
- Video Quality: Videos should be in MP4 format and under 1GB to ensure they play smoothly without buffering.

Step-by-Step Guide to Add Media to a Shopify Product

Desktop
Step 1: From your Shopify admin, go to Products
Step 2: Select the product you want to add media to (e.g. scrunchies)
Step 3: In the “Media” section, click “+”. Here, you’ll see 2 options to add media as following:
Method 1: Upload from Your Computer
Click “Add media” to upload media from your computer or choose directly from your image library
Method 2: Embed Media from a URL
Click Add from URL and paste the link to your media (must be hosted online)
Method 3: Use Metafields for Custom Media
Step 1: From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Custom data
Step 2: In the Metafields section, Click “Products”
Step 3: Create a new Metafield definition for media files.
Step 4: Name your metafield definition and click the standard metafield definition that is displayed (e.g. video)
Step 5: Select the display type you want
Step 6: Click Save to apply the changes
Step 7: Go back to your Shopify admin, go to Products and select the product you want to add media to
Step 8: Scroll down to the Metafields section and paste the link to your media
Step 9: Finally, click Save to apply the changes
iOS and Android
Step 1: Open the Shopify app on your device.
Step 2: Tap “Products” and select the product you want to edit.
Step 3: Tap “Add media” and choose to take a photo/video or select from your device’s gallery.
Step 4: Edit and crop as needed, then tap “Done” to add the media.
Set An Image Or Video To Be The Main Media For Your Product
Once you’ve uploaded multiple media items for a product, you can select one as the main media.
Simply navigate to the media, click the six-dot icon to drag and drop the image or video into the first place of the media list.
