Shopify Pricing Plans & Fees: A Comprehensive Guide

Last updated: January 10, 2023

In this article, we provide a comprehensive guide on how to choose the best Shopify Pricing Plans for your business, with an in-depth analysis of each plan.

More importantly, you can find tips on saving Shopify costs that are recommended for all Shopify Plans at the end of this article.

Shopify Pricing Plans: Overview

Tips: How to check Shopify Pricing for your store location

Shopify has different prices and transaction fees for different countries and regions.

If you want to sell to a specific country, it is ideal for locating your Shopify store there. However, make sure you check Shopify pricing for that country first.

Step 1: Visit

Step 2: Scroll down to the footer section and choose where you want to locate your store.

Step 3: A list of available languages and countries will be shown. Click on any country to view the Shopify version for that country/region.

Step 4: Click on the Pricing section - normally in the header bar (in this example, I have chosen the Canada version). You might find the Shopify Pricing for Canada here different from the original United State ones.

Step 5: Click on Compare Pricing Plans (or similar section in your language of choice) to view transaction fees for your store location.

Note: Just to be sure, you can turn on your VPN (if you are outside of your target country), or turn off the VPN (if you are inside your target country)

Shopify Starter Plan - 5$ per month

The Shopify Starter plan costs just $5 per month. Starting in November of 2022, Shopify even offers 1$ per month for the first three months with Shopify Starter.

On the other hand, you can opt-in for the 3-day free trial to experience this plan and test if Shopify Starter is suitable for your online store.

Note: In June of 2022, Shopify Starter became the entry-level plan offered by Shopify after replacing the old Shopify Lite Plan.

While sharing almost the same features, Shopify Starter Plan is cheaper than the Shopify Lite (was $9 monthly).

The Starter Plan is ideal for selling online through social media, email, SMS, WhatsApp, and anywhere else you might want to share a link to a product.

Plus, you don’t have to spend much time and effort setting up your own online store. With the optimization for mobile devices, Shopify Starter Plan makes it easy for customers to make purchases wherever and whenever they find your products.

You should use Shopify Starter if:

  • It is your first time selling online
  • You have fanbases on social media
  • You don’t know how to set up an online store
  • You are tight on budget
  • You are a one-man-army

You should avoid the Shopify Starter Plan if:

  • You are interested in creating your stand-alone e-commerce store using Shopify
  • You are unable to use Shopify Payments
  • Your margins are very narrow
  • You want to integrate online and offline purchases

Overall, Shopify Starter focuses on a quick and easy way to sell products online without requiring complicated tools, high prices, or even a website.

With that said, it comes with the basic features of a Shopify Plan while lacking most of the advanced features.

Shopify Basic Plan

The Shopify Basic plan costs $39 per month. From December of 2022, Shopify even offers 1$ per month for the first three months with Shopify Basic.

Moreover, you can opt-in for the 14-day free trial to experience this plan and test if the Basic Shopify Plan is suitable for your online store.

The Shopify Basic Plan includes all the features offered in Shopify Starter, as well as additional features to help you sell your products, such as:

  • Over 90 mobile-responsive themes from the Shopify Theme Store, including 11 free Shopify Themes
  • Unlimited products, up to 4 inventory locations, two staff accounts, and 24/7 customer support
  • The ability to offer customers Gift Cards and Discount Codes and send them Abandoned Cart Recovery emails.
  • One-click checkout functionality (if the customer has previously purchased from a Shopify store, they will not need to enter their details)
  • Basic Reports that help you monitor and analyze the performance of your store
  • In addition to real-time shipping rates, Shopify Shipping offers big discounts from major carriers and the ability to print shipping labels in bulk.
  • You can easily integrate online and offline sales with Shopify POS Lite
  • There are many drop-shipping integrations available
  • Multi-currency and multi-language support is available through Shopify Markets

The Basic Shopify Plan is for you if:

  • Currently, you do not have an online store
  • You are looking for a fully functional stand-alone store that fits your budget
  • Plans with more advanced features aren’t necessary
  • Your sales volume is low (where higher transaction rates might pose a problem).

You might need a more advanced Shopify Plan if:

  • More than two staff accounts to access the Shopify store or more than four inventory locations are required
  • You need advanced reporting functionality
  • If you want more significant (and more flexible) shipping discounts or if you don’t qualify for Shopify Shipping
  • You want to automate specific processes within your store

Shopify Plan

As the next step up from the Basic Shopify Plan, the Shopify Plan costs $105 per month.

The Shopify Plan provides all the functionality of Shopify Basic, as well as a few more advanced features, including

  • A maximum of five inventory locations and five staff accounts
  • Reports with more advanced features (orders, sales, profits, customers, etc.)
  • Specific tasks can be automated (e.g., ordering more stock when inventory is low, notifying customers when wishlist items are back in stock, etc.)
  • Discounts on shipping, shipping discounts based on size and weight, and shipping insurance of up to $200
  • Reduced credit card processing fees and transaction fees

The Shopify Plan is for you if:

  • You have high sales volumes, and the lower transaction fees are more cost-effective than the Basic plan
  • You require more advanced reporting features than those provided by the Basic plan,
  • Automation functionality is important to you
  • You’d benefit from Shopify Shipping discounts based on weight and size or shipping insurance

You might need a more advanced Shopify Plan if:

  • There are more than five staff accounts or more than five inventory locations required
  • Shopify Shipping would benefit you, but you are not eligible for it
  • The reporting functionality needs to be enhanced even further
  • As an international seller, you would like to estimate and collect taxes and duties at the point of sale

Shopify Advanced Plan

The Shopify Advanced plan costs $399 per month, an enormous jump from the “Shopify” plan.

The Shopify Advanced plan includes all of the functionality and features of the Shopify plan, as well as the following additional features:

  • Manage up to 8 inventory locations and 15 staff accounts for your Shopify store.
  • Enhanced reporting functionality (custom reports and filters)
  • Third-party calculated shipping rates outside of Shopify Shipping (useful if Shopify Shipping doesn’t support your carrier or you don’t qualify for it)
  • Automatic import tax and duty calculation and collection for international shipments
  • Further reduced credit card processing fees and transaction fees

Shopify Advanced Plan is for you if:

  • Your high sales volumes make the lower fees more economical than the “Shopify” plan.
  • You need super advanced reporting features.
  • You don’t qualify for Shopify Shipping service.
  • You sell internationally and would benefit from automatic import tax calculations and collections.

You might need an even more advanced Shopify Plan if:

  • You need more customization and an enhanced checkout experience.
  • You need a bespoke plan and exclusive customer support.

Shopify Plus

Shopify Plus costs a minimum of $2,000 per month.

After that, you’ll pay 0.25 percent of your monthly revenue once you generate $800,000 or more per month. For example, for 1 million dollars monthly revenue, you will need to spend 2500$ for Shopify Plus.

On the other hand, the Shopify Plus fee is capped at $40,000 per month for 16 million dollars of monthly sales.

Shopify Plus provides a fully hosted enterprise eCommerce platform specifically designed for high-growth merchants and brands.

With Shopify Plus, you’ll get everything you get with Shopify Advanced, plus bespoke features customized to meet your specific business needs:

  • Unlimited staff accounts and up to 20 inventory locations.
  • Enhanced checkout customization (branding, layout, design, offers, discounts).
  • More automation (e.g., automatic event scheduling using Shopify Launchpad).
  • Support from Launch Managers, Merchant Success Managers, and Solutions Engineers.
  • Wholesale and B2B-specific features.
  • Scalable performance (to cope with large traffic volumes).
  • Create up to nine extra “expansion” stores, for example, in other countries or locations.
  • Extra POS features (Shopify POS Pro is free while costing $89 per month on other Shopify plans).
  • Make “sandbox” stores to test new features and technologies.
  • Exclusive Shopify Plus apps (e.g., Transporter, Bulk Account Inviter).
  • Performance and complexity improvements through additional API calls.

If your ecommerce store generates more than 60 thousand dollars in monthly revenue, Shopify will contact you and help you to upgrade to Shopify Plus.

Furthermore, you should use Shopify Plus if:

  • You are an enterprise ecommerce business
  • You have 60,000$ monthly revenue with your Shopify Advanced plan
  • You serve wholesale customers
  • You are choosing cloud-based e-commerce over the on-premise approach: Shopify Plus also saves you from heavy initial investments in building your e-commerce platform from scratch while providing quick deployment, scalability, and maintenance worry-free.

Shopify Plus might not be for you if:

  • You are new to ecommerce
  • You are not at the enterprise level
  • You want full control and unlimited customization with your e-commerce platform

Shopify Free Trial

Shopify Free Trial is offered for a 3-day period, without any fees and adding credit card details.

By doing so, merchants can learn about Shopify and discover its value before using any Shopify paid plan. With that said, you can experience all of the above plans for free, with almost every features available.

The free trial period is a great way to see if Shopify can help you sell your products, grow your business and build your online store. Before the trial expires, you can do almost everything a paid Shopify account can do, like

  • Create unlimited products and collections
  • Create unlimited stores
  • Install Shopify apps and themes

You should upgrade to one of the Shopify paid plans to avoid the following scenarios:

  • Your online store accessibility is limited.
  • You cannot receive an order during the free trial period.
  • Shopify will delete your free trial store.

Shopify Fees: Transaction fees and credit card fees explained

What are Shopify Fees?

Shopify Fees are costs that depend on your Shopify sales volume, which comes from payment processing and transaction fees.

On the other hand, you still have to pay your gateway provider transaction fees. And there will also be a 1% fee for purchases made by credit card issued outside of the United States.

Additional Shopify costs

Domain for your Shopify Store

In the beginning, the domain for your Shopify store will be something like “” - thus, your store will be fully functional.

However, having your own domain name is absolutely necessary to gain customers’ trust and build your branding. You can find and purchase domain names right on Shopify (starting at 14$ per year) or take a look at other domain name registrars like Namecheap, Godaddy, etc.

The domain you purchased will be yours even if you leave Shopify - you can just transfer it to another registrar.

Email Hosting

Unfortunately, email hosting is not included in your Shopify Plans (while web hosting does on almost every plan), so you must install apps to send email from your store’s domain name.

For example, you can download the Shopify Email app for free, with no charges for the first 10,000 emails. After that, you will have to pay $1 for 1000 emails sent.

Shopify Apps

A Shopify App is a plugin that enhances the functionality of a store and extends the capabilities of a store’s features.

Shopify Apps cost is not included in the Shopify Pricing Plans. Therefore it really depends on your business needs and use cases. Meanwhile, an average merchant installs 6 Shopify Apps, and the average subscription for an app is around $19 per month.

There are more than 8,000 apps available in the Shopify App Store, of which more than half of them have free trials or free plans. Many of the free plans have limited functionality, but you can test how well they work before upgrading to a paid plan.

The cost for Shopify Apps might vary between 50$ to 2000$ per month.

Shopify Themes

Shopify Themes are website templates you can choose for your Shopify Store. They play an important role in determining how your website looks and feels for customers who visit it.

In technical terms, The Shopify Themes display what the users see on the screen through HTML, CSS, JS, Liquid, and picture files, which offers a different style, layout, and user experience.

In addition, Shopify Themes are not included in the Shopify Pricing Plans. However, there are many free and premium options available, both inside and outside Shopify.

Here are where you can get Shopify Themes for your Shopify Store

Shopify Theme Store

Shopify Theme Store is a marketplace where you can find themes with different User Interfaces and integrated features for your Shopify Store.

You can always try applying both free and premium themes to your store. However, you will have to purchase these premium themes before publishing them.

Third-party marketplaces for Shopify Themes

Besides Shopify Theme Store, these are the top 3 third-party marketplaces for Shopify Theme:

  • TemplateMonster: TemplateMonster is a Website Templates, Plugins, and Graphics Digital Marketplace. Especially it provides you with very helpful search function, and Shopify Theme features a filter to find the most suitable theme for your store.

However, you will have to download them from these marketplaces and manually upload them to your Shopify Store. It might also come with some compatibility problems if the theme has been outdated.

Shopify Pricing conclusion

Choosing your Shopify Pricing Plans accordingly to your revenue

The following pie chart shows the cost structure of an e-commerce store

Our recommendation for merchants who are new to e-commerce platforms is to pay less than 10% of their revenue for Shopify. However, it also depends on your industry and business model, and in most cases, your Shopify Apps will take a large share of your Shopify cost.

For the 3 main Shopify Pricing Plans, we recommend that:

  • With less than 2 thousand dollars of monthly revenue, you might want to stick with your Basic Shopify Plan.
  • After that, between 2 thousand dollars and 4 thousand dollars in monthly revenue, it is recommended to upgrade to the Shopify Plan.
  • Merchants who generate more than $4,000 per month can subscribe to the Advanced Shopify Plan.

Furthermore, if your ecommerce store generates more than 60 thousand dollars in monthly revenue, the Shopify Customer Success department will contact you and help you upgrade to Shopify Plus.

Choosing your Shopify Pricing Plans accordingly to your needs

Practically, it is not ideal to choose your Shopify Pricing Plan by your monthly revenue.

In reality, you might need to have a more advanced Shopify Plan (with features to grow) to reach your higher goals, even though managing a 10% cost structure will be fine in the short term.

With that said, you should consider these factors before choosing your plan:

  • Your product: If you have a huge number of products with tons of repetitive tasks, you should use the Shopify Plan, Shopify Advanced, and Shopify Plus. The three plans offer Shopify Flow, an ecommerce automation that reduces manual work and human errors for your business.

  • Your market: If you are expanding to the international market, you might need exclusive features like Carrier-calculated shipping or auto duties and import taxation from the Advanced Shopify Plan or Shopify Plus.

  • Your operation: If you want to access more reports to optimize your operation, you might need to choose a more advanced Shopify Plan. On the other hand, if you want to attract more wholesalers to your online store, it is recommended to use Shopify Plus.

  • Your expertise: Shopify might be overwhelming at first, so it would be better if you try the lower Shopify Plan first. You can always upgrade to a higher plan anytime you want while keeping all of your data and products.

Cost-saving tips for Shopify!

Using Shopify Payments

You won’t be charged credit card fees if you use Shopify Payments as your card payment processor.

If you do a lot of transactions and have a high turnover, you could save thousands of dollars.

Getting your domain from other registrars

You can usually get a cheaper domain name if you buy it somewhere else rather than from Shopify.

Pause and Build Plan

If you need to take a break from selling, the Pause and Build plan is an excellent option.

It costs $14 USD every 30 days and is best suited to merchants who wish to stop selling but wish to continue building their stores.

You can use this plan if you are considering rebranding your visuals, taking a break from seasonal sales, or simply needing to step away from selling temporarily.

How to activate the Pause and Build Plan:

  1. Log in to your store as the store owner.
  2. From your Shopify admin, click Settings > Plan.
  3. Click Deactivate store > Pause and build plan.
  4. Carefully review the plan details, and then click Switch to Pause and build.

If you want to start selling products again, then you can reopen your online store at any time by choosing a new plan.

Paying your Shopify Fees Annually or Biennially

You can save 10% and 20% if you pay your Shopify fees in one go, either annually or biennially, rather than paying the monthly fee.

Despite the fact that this may require significant upfront expenditure, it can result in significant savings in the long run.
